Fashion Week Day 3

There's hardly space to move in the All Stream center as crowds clamour to see what Canada's stars of style have lined up for us for fall. Colossal screens flanking the runways are used to full effect as video artists create installations that are witty, provocative and ingenious. Andy The-Ahn's collection is pure film noir - 1940's Berlin. Aggressively sleek, the look inspires one to make a call to CSIS to find out how exactly you apply for a position as a spy (turns out you just mail them your resume). The Pink Tartan show starts 25 minutes late as organizers desperately try to herd the crowds off the runway and into their seats. Organizers have to resort to locking arms to create a moving wall in full riot police style - and show Toronto police how it's done with style (trench coats and dark glasses make a great look for crowd control). This proves difficult as there are fewer seats than fans, and many of Toronto's finest fannies find themselves on the floor. Aviator hats set off a northern look complete with fur skirts perfect for a dogsledding party in Algonquin. Fashion week is paying off with international coverage, including a full page spread of Robin Kay and friends in Fashion China - thanks to Adam X!

Fashion Week kicks off at the All Stream building. You'll know this as the Automotive Building where we've all cringed while changing in the grotty bathrooms during the Clothing Shows. Thankfully the building has been completely revamped and glamified. Fashion addicts heave a sigh of relief as the Nathan Phillips Square campout is replaced with gold lame couches, hair and make-up artists at your service, and a high tech media lounge complete with sweet little LG laptops lighter than your handbag. For once an instant hit is available for those craving a little shopping therapy with an in-house store selling the best of Canadian designers. For those on a smaller budget, designer Barbies are available to play with and style (my Workaholic Barbie was styled with a little laptop and a coffee - no glam for her). Live streaming of all the shows can be viewed at the Fashion Week website.

...that's the Home Shopping Channel - home to affordable top designer Lucian Matis, David Dixon and Kendra Francis.

In a press release, Kendra Francis of Franke fame says, “Learning and growing and reaching out to a wider clientele and educating myself on the business, is a welcome and rewarding challenge.” The collection is fashionable, contemporary and styled exclusively for the Shopping Channel. ‘K Kendra Francis’ is made up of 13, all jersey pieces that can be mixed, matched and worked into every woman’s existing wardrobe. The very affordable line includes dresses, tops, pants and jackets ranges in price from $60 - $220 ‘I focused on bold colours, great cut and fit."

I would love to report that this is sort of a Canadian version of say Viktor and Rolf for Target; but no, unfortunately it's still the Home Shopping Channel and the clothing, though labeled, is still geared for mostly mature, get up and go gals.

However, if it's genuine designer you're after (there's even a little Brian Bailey and Wayne Clarke), there may be one or two buys.

To find a complete fabulous outfit for $50.

The Find:
An amazing 'eurotrash' stylish outfit (complete with boots) that I love:

1. Marciano jeans (perfect condition AND already hemmed) $9.99
2. Upside down tank top shirt with ribbon detail, screen print and jewelled embellishment $12.99
3. Fake Prada purse (that I gave to a thankful friend because of my adversity to fake bags) $7.99
4. Knee-high Italian leather boots $12.99
5. Grey velvet cropped jacket $12.99

When I began this challenge of finding a complete, head-to-toe fall outfit, I could have opted for a cutesy dress and cardigan combo or 80s tapered pants and boyfriend blazer - but decided on more practical pieces that I could mix and match and get the most wear out of: jeans and a shirt.

Value Village has a huge selection of jeans, nicely organized by size, ranging from $7.99 to $9.99. The two pair of jeans I ended up buying - Marciano and Club Monaco - were in great condition and fit perfectly!

I passed up many colorful vintage pumps for these boots. Although they're a few seasons old, I could not pass up the $12.99 price tag for perfect condition leather Italian designer super high boots that'll look great worn over jeans or even with a dress.

I attempted to seek out the perfect 'vintage' boyfriend blazer but came upon this fabulous grey velvet cropped jacket for $12.99! I splurged on this trip and bought a second jacket - a snug, bleached zip-up jean jacket!

Value Village stores are all over the city - all with different inventory that changes constantly! For the best finds and deals you should try to peruse often.

These days, no one questions the cult of celebrity – it’s just what it is. But if you could travel back in time to investigate its origins, your time would be well spent at the latest AGO and ROM exhibitions showcasing a massive collection of fashion and celebrity photo portraits – an evolutionary snapshot of the birth of modern portraiture married with celebrity culture.

The TSF.com team recommends you pace yourself for these two exhibitions - you might want to spread your voyeurism over two days.

Day 1 – Visit the AGO Edward Steichen show at an un-peak time of day, as there are so many photos to view and they are displayed in clusters. Maybe not the best exhibition set-up (unless you have sharp elbows), but they really did want to get as many of Steichen’s photos in as possible. Also bring a scarf or light coat as the rooms are chilly!

Ed Steichen was one of the highest paid photographers of the 20th century. This exhibition is like a master class of the who’s who in fashion and the arts of the 1920’s and 30’s. Working as the chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair, Steichen photographed the most worthy fashion names of the day: Schiaparelli, Hattie Carnegie, Chanel, Lanvin, Cartier, Lelong, Perugia, Poiret and Worth – and that was just the clothing/accessories. Seriously, if you are planning a fashion photo shoot, this exhibition is excellent for research and idea generation. Modern fashion photography all began with this man.

Day 2 – The Vanity Fair show at the ROM feels less congested in its layout but we still recommend you give yourself time to view all the images. FYI – the ROM has a great café in basement so take a break mid-viewing to rest your star-struck eyes. And you will be very star-struck at this exhibition! The roster of celebrity photographers on show is extensive: Ritts, Meisel, Bill King, Nan Goldin. Lachapelle, Snowdon, Weber, Baron de Meyer, Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Cecil Beaton and of course Leibovitz. The information provided with each image is wonderful – informative cards tell you the subject, the photographer, the date and give you a bite-size bit of background info on each photo.

This show is a dynamite retrospective which clearly illustrates how Vanity Fair magazine played a huge part in creating the genre of modern celebrity portraiture for over a century. And if you are at all aspiring paparazzi/art director/editor then you had better get to this show and study it.

These supernova of celebrity shows both opened simultaneously at the AGO and ROM Sept 26, 2009 and run until early January 2010.

On the runways for Fall 2009 (and in the nearest forever 21 near you), embellished tights are all the rage in tartan, lace, stripes and dots; stylized with legwarmers and chunky socks; and comfortably worn with shoes or boots.

A staple for any updated wardrobe though is solid color tights - for Fall 2009 try red and purple.

(I am so lucky to have received a box of Secret tights in the newest fall colors - including diamond weave, grey, brown, purple, magenta and red!)

Call for Designers Weavers Art Rugs

Weavers Art and the Interior Design Show are calling interior designers, industrial and graphic designers, architects, and artists for rug design submissions to be considered for the Weavers Art new ERA collection. Twelve designs will be selected by a jury and produced as limited edition hand-woven rugs available through Weavers Art exclusively.
These designs will be displayed in the exhibition “A New Era: Evolution of Rug Artistry,” presented by Weavers Art at the Interior Design Show, on January 21-24, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The rugs will be auctioned off and proceeds will go to charity. Charitable beneficiaries include: Rugmark Foundation (to provide education for rug-making communities) and Dare Arts (providing local art-based programs for at-risk children).

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Entries due Monday August 31, 2009
Entries to be electronically submitted to matrix@interiordesignshow.com
Submissions are to be sent via email in PDF format and are to include:
1. line drawing;
2. colour rendering with the dimensions 16cm x 20cm;
3. Professional bio
Those designs selected for production may be subject to modifications by Weavers Art for weaving purposes in collaboration with the designer
Rug designs are the copyright of the designer
Those rugs produced for the IDS exhibit are the property of Weavers Art
Weavers Art reserves the right to produce additional rugs according to contractual arrangement between designers and Weavers Art specifying a negotiated fee or royalties as part of the ERA limited edition collection
The 12 selected designers / artists will be informed on September 14th
