Post Fashion Week in National Post

Rachel's Weekend Post Snaps Page

A fashion fauxpas
Robin Kay's insistence that Canada is new to fashion seems old

Shinan Govani, National Post, Published: Saturday, October 27, 2007

Fashion Week in Toronto, set against the towers in the city's most famous square, has never looked better, but a dark pall has fallen on the woman who makes it all happen.

Robin Kay -- who seems, these days, just one hair's breath away from screaming "No Wire Hangers" -- has been encircled by innuendo, lassoed by protest. Oh, she's her usual motor self, but there's something in her eyes that tells the real story.

A Reporter's Notebook
From dreamy David Dixon to savvy Ula Zukowska, with a gripe or two thrown in for good measure

Nathalie Atkinson, Weekend Post, Published: Saturday, October 27, 2007

"The runway offerings didn't always live up to the expectations created by the spiffy new venue, but Toronto's L'Oreal Fashion Week offered much of interest. Herewith, a few observations..."

"A rant about that other runway As I watched Canadian designers showing off their best-of-the-best all week, I felt a rant bubbling up about Project Runway Canada. Because of a media embargo that prevents me from describing the finalists' collections, which we saw, I can talk about the show only in general terms. So I'll confine myself to what has already aired on Slice and what everybody knows. Iman, darling, you are gorgeous, and you are an astute businesswoman, but your delivery is wooden. It's embarrassing."

Toronto Fashion Heroes

Kudos to Toronto fashion industry insider and supporter Andrew Sardone, Now Magazine's fashion editor for this week's Goods Story - Toronto Fashion Heroes.

In it, he profiles some of Toronto's most active and nurturing fashion faces including Marlene Shiff, Fritz Helder and the Phantoms and our own...

"SONJA ANDIC fearless fashion blogger

More than one industry insider has mentioned the names Isabella Blow and Sonja Andic in the same breath. Legendarily mad-hatted British stylist Blow died this year, but our own chicly eccentric style character and TorontoStreetFashion.com blogger is just getting started.

Andic can always be depended on to make a grand entrance at every fashion fete (usually draped in a mix of designer vintage and gutsy indie-label garb) surrounded by a motley crew of wardrobe risk-takers, including artist Christabel and Preloved shop boy and party promoter Daniel Wilson. Her Susie-Love-cocktail-ringed finger is on the pulse of emerging Toronto fashion, and she doesn't give a shit what you think about her hot Irene Stickney chain-suspender bubble skirt."

TSF Swap on Front of Weekend Post

Wow, was I happy to see the front page of the Weekend Post today! There is a big photo of the Torontostreetfashion clothing swap we held on July 8th at Buddies. Apparently Toronto is on the cutting edge when it comes to eco-sensitivity & fashion. I want to thank everyone who helped out and participated in the TSF clothing swap. We plan to do it again in the fall.

Are you wearing black?

If you pick up any newspaper or magazine, you'll see that everyone is talking about black nail polish - the latest trend to hit little LA celebutantes. Some people are thrilled that the black stuff is getting the credit it deserves, but how cool is something if suburban moms are match-manicuring with their teenage daughters?

Did you read Sonja's article in this Weekend National Post?
"Dark Nails Come into the Light"

Are you wearing black nail polish? Is this trend too mainstream? Will you continue wearing yours?

Fashion in NOW Magazine

Did you pick up your free copy of NOW Magazine this week? It seems that Fashion editor Andrew Sardone must've fought for a little extra space this issue to fill with fashion week notes and previews!

See Vanja Vasic, FAT executive director in My Style here >>

And there's even a page dedicated to some up and coming designers that will be showcased at Alternative Fashion Week. Worth a look!

I must congratulate our very own Irene Stickney for becoming a runner-up in the NOW Magazine Design Challenge "The 10 finalists in NOW's Designer Challenge will be unveiled Tuesday (October 17) at the Distillery District (55 Mill) during Toronto Alternative Fashion Week's (www.getfat.ca) opening night. Guests will vote for outfits ranging from a slouchy newsboy ensemble to a Wonder Woman-style outfit. From October 19 to 30, each design will be featured in the window of a different boutique around Toronto, and shoppers will have a chance to make their pick. Check Fashion Notes next week for a complete list of retailers."

To see sketches of some of the finalists, you'll have to read your own copy!

TSF in National Post

The Toronto Fashion Incubator Press & Buyers Breakfast, Spring 2007
Held at the Drake Hotel Sept 20, 2006
Sonja Andic

Two days before the TFI Press & Buyers meeting, I received a call from our favourite National Post columnist Nathalie Atkinson asking if I would go on ‘special assignment’ and take photos of stylistas. Of course I said……..YES! The Post was keen to have me feel out who I thought was the most street-savvy at the event and gave me free rein to take photos of who I wanted - which is what I do normally.

I'm working on coverage of the Press & Buyers Breakfast and will post soon - In the meantime, check out the full page coverage here.

The Buyers:
Marlene Shiff, Boutique Le Trou with Alexia and Kasha of Pho Pa |Friends
Vanja Vasic, executive director of Toronto Alternative Fashion Week

The Designers: Jewellery designer Monikque with model in her extravagant designs
