Design a Tee - Contest

Calling all fashion design students!
Fashion Targets Breast Cancer – National Design Contest
by Wednesday, April 29th at 5 p.m.

Every year Rethink runs a fundraising and awareness campaign called Fashion Targets Breast Cancer (FTBC). Launched in 13 countries around the world, Rethink is the official driving force behind the campaign in Canada. The FTBC campaign targets young women (and men) across the country, and aims to raise awareness about the disease through the sale of fashionable t-shirts branded with the internationally recognized ‘target’ logo which is a reminder to women to “target” their breast health. All proceeds from the sale of the shirts go to Rethink Breast Cancer to fund their research, supportive care and education and awareness programs.

The Contest
Rethink Breast Cancer is challenging fashion students across the country to design/create a unique target inspired t-shirt that represents their take on the issue of breast cancer or how the cause has affected them. Students are also asked to creatively incorporate the signature ‘target’ logo into their design. The sky’s the limit in terms of creativity.

· The piece of clothing must be a t-shirt (please note that we are looking for creative interpretations of the definition of t-shirt!)
· The ‘target’ logo must be incorporated and can be deconstructed or reconstructed in any form)

Details:
All contest entries are due to Rethink Breast Cancer by Wednesday, April 29th at 5 p.m. A final physical t-shirt as well as digital images of the t-shirt and the t-shirt design must be provided as part of the submission.

A bursary of $1,500 will also be awarded to the student with the winning entry, to be used towards additional fashion schooling or towards the production of their design.

For more information about activities associated with this year’s FTBC campaign, visit www.fashiontargets.ca.

Alternative Fashion Week Alternative Model Casting

March 22. 2009 from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Location: Glam Studio and Gallery; 649 The Queensway, Toronto
Map: www.649thequeensway.com
Bring: 2 recent photos of yourself and a killer walk

Calling the city’s most diverse beauties to strut their stuff in a walk-off during this spirited and rare casting event.

Once again |FAT| challenges the status quo and takes a socially progressive approach to fashion by inviting men and women of all shapes, sizes and ethnic varieties to bring their killer walks to our runway.

“We are looking for real men and women with striking, conventional, unconventional and exceptional looks, ” says Vanja Vasic, executive director of |FAT| Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion Week.

|FAT|’s mandate to create an inclusive environment means selecting models who best represent Canada’s diversity. This year the focus is unearthing passionate individuals that have the fire and confidence to engage, excite and turn heads on the runway. “|FAT| models are not display cases; they are people who breathe life into the clothes.”

Tattoos, piercings and other “forbidden” characteristics for traditional models are embraced at |FAT|. “Truly beautiful people are those who aren’t afraid to break boundaries and be themselves, ” says Vasic.

This year, we are looking for models to work it on the runway for 4 fashion-filled, sensory-indulgent, action-packed days.

Judging Panel: Vanja Vasic: Director of |FAT|, William Zaiden Chrysler: Fashion Photographer, Wesley Badanjak: Designer for LOVAS

FAT| Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion Week will take place April 21-24, 2009 at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District.

Call for HOST: New Fashion/Make-over Show

PROPER TELEVISION, producers of Canada’s Worst Driver and Canada’s Worst Handyman, seeks a stylishly brazen HOST to lead their new lifestyle series. This new makeover format swoops in to transform women who dress inappropriately and dangerously outside their age demographic. In every episode, our style expert embarks on a journey to revamp the look of one participant whose style is somewhat questionable. Fashion Designers call for TV Series

Currently casting up-and-coming fashion designers for a documentary television series teaser/pilot. It's an independent, guerilla-style project establishing the content and style of show, which we will then bring to networks who have already shown a keen interest. We'll be following the designers as they work to pull off their first (or second) major show at L'Oreal Fashion Week. Designers are filmed in their own apartments, workspaces and favourite social spots. This would be a unique opportunity to raise designers' profiles as they launch their career in fashion.

Designers selected to participate will be selected on personality, style of design, and enthusiasm for being involved. They have to be open to sharing their creative work process and pieces of their lives outside of work. Designers must show their Fall/Winter 2009 collections at L'Oreal Fashion Week in March 2009. All designers must be Toronto-based.

To be considered for the show, please email designercasting@gmail.com before November 21, 2008 and provide the following:

• Description of your design style, vision for your runway show and intended location (in tent or alternative location)

• 5 sketches of your upcoming Fall/Winter 2009 collection

• 5 photos of existing pieces or a link to your website

• Photo of yourself

• If possible, create a video of yourself with your designs and why you should be featured on the show

Project Runway Canada

Great news for Canadian fashion junkies: Project Runway Canada is on its way, scheduled to air October 8, 2007 @ 10 p.m. on the Slice Network.

The designers have been announced and include some familiar faces, fabulously talented locals and even a couple self-taught designers:

We're watching out for Lucien Matis, an incredibly creative, relocated Torontonian, who has been capturing media attention since his L'Oreal Fashion Week debut this past spring. Local designer Shernett Swaby joins the group and we just wonder where she finds the time, what with running her successful boutique Swaby and designing every beautiful high-end piece in it!

Supermodel Iman hosts the series and is joined by judges/designers Brian Bailey and Shawn Hewson, as well as Elle Canada editor, Rita Silvan.

The Slice - Project Runway Canada website provides a complete destination for profiles, videos, behind-the-scenes dirt and even designer blogs! Can't wait!
