|FAT| Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion Week returns to the Distillery District, (55 Mill St. Bld. 6) April 21– 24, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

FOUR days of fashion, music, performance and art, each night with a different theme:
Home, Planet, Gutter & Beyond.

april 21 |HOME| Designers and artists explore the place which is most familiar and known to us. The night looks at the meaning of home through culture and history, romance and beauty, power and subtlety, sexuality and domesticity.

april 22 |PLANET| In celebration of Earth Day, |FAT| responds to the challenges of surviving in an increasingly unpredictable planet. By showcasing work that suggests a balance between progress and nature, this night presents artists and designers concerned with sustainability, innovation, technology, evolution and adaptation.

april 23 |GUTTER| Unsettling. Shifting. Extreme. How do we survive in these volatile times? |FAT| explores art & fashion through the current social, political and economic aspects of a place on the edge.

april 24 |BEYOND| |FAT| takes a glance at where we are headed and how we can reinvent ourselves. Artists seek to experiment, play, and dream. They push barriers and challenge conventions. Imagination and the extremes of invention shape possibilities for the future.
Inclusive. Engaging. Diverse. |FAT| builds connections, opportunities and communities. This interactive festival acts as a platform for creators to experiment with fashion, not only as a commodity but also as an art form.

[FAT] Alternative Fashion Week

Lastnight, Tuesday Oct. 17, 2006 was the first day of the second annual Toronto Alternative Fashion Week and torontostreetfashion.com was there in full force!

Read Kate's adventures >>
"Tuesday night our fabulous foursome pulled into the ultimate parking spot directly in front of The Gooderham and Wort’s Fermenting Cellar, this years home of Toronto Alternative Fashion Week. On a rainy Toronto night what could be a more perfect sign of good things to come!

We made an impressive entrance and were warmly greeted. Once sorted with the night’s itinerary, bios of all the designers and artists, we were off in all directions to suss out the scene. My first stop was the NOW Magazine Design Competition Finalists Collection. Elizabeth Pinter’s voluminous, bustled gown and totally wearable newsprint boots were charming and everyone agreed that Laurie Anne Towata’s twilled newsprint boa was impressive."

"The Distillery District provided the perfect underground feel for the kick-off of the 2nd annual Toronto Alternative Fashion Week [FAT]. Fashionistas, photographers, artists, designers, and publicists along with the creative and curious packed into the Fermenting Cellar as the room buzzed with energy and excitement. In the true spirit of alternative fashion, the night was a celebration of diversity, identity and the possibilities encountered in cutting edge style.

The crowd was treated to the grooving sounds of DJ Medicine Man, Amanda Kaye, Guys with Bangs and Roshini Celina Joseph. Playful artwork surrounded the space that was also invaded with modern dance, video and performance art. Cake Girls Karina Bergmans and Jenny McMaster sweetened the evening with a far-out mix of fashion, food and performance complete with a birthday cake hat and “loafers” (bread-loaf shoes). In true Canadian spirit they delivered a reading from Margaret Atwood’s Edible Woman."

Toronto Alternative Fashion Week

By Irene Stickney

Everyone knows that fashion thinks six months ahead of time, designing winter clothes in the summer, and vice versa. So it's no surprise that Toronto Alternative Fashion Week (FAT) Director Vanja Vasic has started promoting for her October fashion extravaganza already. But when I promised Vanja I'd help her organize PR for the show, I had no idea what I was getting myself into....

We met at Vanja's beautifully decorated lakefront condo for drinks beforehand. The first wall of her apartment is painted with chalk paint, and on it is written the dictionary definition of ‘home’. There are paintings on all the walls, large couches, sculpture everywhere, beautiful carpets. Vanja’s room is painted lime green and black - not colours I would choose but they work wonderfully. Tiny lights like little stars are suspended from the ceiling. Photo’s from FAT last year are on the walls and her closet is overflowing with beaded, jewelled costumes.
She brings out the tutus, corsets for us to wear while we flyer. Her friend owns Deja Vu in Kensington, she generously lent them to us. She serves drinks, we smoke. Vanja is an excellent hostess! We talk about alternative fashion week, designers, art. FAT is the same week as L’oreal fashion week this year. Scandal! It is all we talk about.

I wear a cascading violet tutu, with layers and layers of tulle overflowing until I look a ballerina. A tiny corset, with a dangerous neckline and tiny purple flowers. I wear a top hat. We all wear tutu’s, Niamh, Megan, Chantelle and Vanja, too. Ian wears one around his neck, with a leather cutout corset. We take the streetcar like this, and get looks from everyone. What a spectacle! We sneak drinks from tallcans on the streetcar. At Andy Poolhall, we dance and hand out flyers.
We argue over what we should call ourselves - someone suggests 'the pussy parade' but someone else doesn't like it. Someone even offers to hire us.
I feel like I can't wait three more months for FAT. Damn this living three months ahead of everything!
Check out www.getfat.ca for more information, or to enter work in Toronto Alternative Fashion Week.
