L'Oreal Fashion Week Day 3: The Big Bubble, Grumpy Fashion Editors
by Sonja Andic
The
Bubble Dress Sensation
I
am sure most would agree that what one wears to fashion week is
of utmost importance. With that in mind I forgot to tell you that
on Day 2 at [FAT], I took a dress [practically off a model backstage]
belonging to Toronto designer Irene
Stickney, to make my big entrance for Day 3.
I
chose Irene’s black and white bubble dress with huge gold
chains worn like suspenders over the shoulders [chains big enough
that I could pull down a tree] because: 1. I wanted to wear a Toronto
designer 2. It is a freakin cool dress 3. I wanted to bring a bit
of alternative fashion week to L’Oreal. If any of you remember
that Brit sitcom Absolutely Fabulous you’ll understand when
I say – I always wanted to be Bubble. This is totally a dress
Bubble would have worn. TSF.com editor Rachel scored one of Irene’s
puff dresses as well.
Arriving
at Muzik, my gold chains jingle in anticipation at the media frenzy
our dresses will cause. As soon as Rachel and I enter the building
canada.com are filming us. Flash bulbs are popping. The press is
murmuring. I love the immediate impression the bubble dress is making
on people. The bubble dress makes an impression because it is what
fashion week stands for: making an effort, embracing new and exciting
design, and delighting the audience!
Grumpy
Fashion Week at Muzik
Am I the only one who’s noticed that people are grumpy this
week?! Not bitchy, but grumpy; case in point, the media tent. As
always, the tent is full of fashion press in repose between shows.
After having a chat here and there, the word on the media catwalk
is this season is just killing everyone with deadlines, extra long
days and lack of sleep. The energy level is a little bit up from
the two previous evenings, yet I sense that there is still way too
much fashion fatigue in the air. Yup, the fashion press is a wee
bit grumpy. Sure everyone has a cold, I have one too. Sure it is
a long fashion week. And it’s true the typical fashion writer
has little or no life during said week. But hey, don’t forget
how fun it can be! It’s only one week everybody!
The
media aren’t the only ones affected by the stress of the week.
At the media tent buffet table one of the buffet attendants is complaining
very loudly that, “People get crazy when there’s free
food”. Ok I would like to point out to staff and volunteers
at fashion week that most of the media have been up since 7 a.m.
and have probably not eaten all day and most likely will not go
to bed until 2 a.m., and then they do it all over again the next
day. Thank you very much.

Front
Row Centre
Grabbing a front row seat I am on deck tonight to finally take in
some shows – Bustle and Andy
The-Anh. Bustle totally captures spring time energy
with the staging - a long catwalk covered in golfing green, and
the models - directed to be flirty and fresh with each other and
the photographers. The collection is candy coloured and fun. I am
pleased to see it has a lot to offer men in the way of style and
choice. Next on the catwalk is Andy The-Anh. He gives a glamorous
show which melds old Hollywood style with modern silhouettes. I
love his metallic jackets the most. I do get the feeling by the
end of the show that he really wants me to buy one of his belts.
Did anyone else get that feeling? If I start madly over-shopping
for belts this week I know who to blame. After the show, Fashion
File is keen to film the bubble dress, I cannot blame them, it is
a fabulous garment. Rachel and I do our best to answer all Fashion
File’s questions and give our thoughts on Andy’s collection.
Alright already enough work let’s party.
MARO
The canada.com crew and I are ready to head out to a party. They
tell me where they are planning to go and I have a mini freak-out,
“You can’t go there, nobody is going there. Everybody
will be at Maro, you must come with me.” I think we can all
agree there is no greater tragedy at fashion week then going to
the wrong after show party.
Maro
is hosting the Big Smoke official after party for Bustle
and the GotStyle fashion show. Huh, another show? It really
never ends at fashion week. Maro night club is packed to the rafters,
I have to stand on a sofa in my Christian Lacroix heels [not an
easy thing to do] just to see anything. I am having a laugh with
Shawn Hewson and his wife Ruth Promislow in the Bustle camp. His
stylist Jeff Kirkwood and Val Dooley are hamming
it up for my camera. This party really rocks. Everyone is dancing,
models are parading around smiling, air kisses fly rapidly. I spot
the two Jen’s from Canada.com playing the bongos. It’s
all good fun – I hope it carries over to Thursday. My bubble
dress is now starting to deflate and that is a sign I need to go
home and use it as my pillow. Yawn… what the hell do I wear
tomorrow…how to follow-up my big bubble sensation……
