L'Oreal Fashion Week Day 2: Town Shoes
Media Breakfast, FAT
by Sonja Andic
Town Shoes Vaudeville Show
Like
most of the ladies in attendance this morning, I'm almost
fully recovered from Day 1 of fashion week. Tuesday begins at the
Town Shoes Bloor Street location for the Richard
Tyler media fete. Bucketed down with rain, I drag my tired
ass into the shop and am delighted to see an almost vaudeville style
sexy shoe show going. It is novel and unique I love it! [See photo]
Town shoes is packed with fashion editors and journalists
– you know, the who’s who kind of people. Talking with
Jeanne Beker is great - I reminded her of yesternight's yodelling
on the escalator and she remembers with a smile. Jeanne is a long
time friend of Richard Tyler's and is there in support! And a good
thing too, as she manages to ask Richard questions when the rest
of the room of reporters draws blanks in an almost awkward silence.

I meet up with Wendy Natale, contributing
stylist at Hello magazine, who looks devastatingly gorgeous so early
in the morning! I then follow up with Pat MCDonagh about
her leg injury from the previous night. Poor thing was sporting
a big white bandage on her leg. When I took her photo she was more
concerned that I clock her Richard Tyler shoes! Apparently the impenetrable
hosiery she was wearing at the time of her injury were Donna Karan
– so these are the hose to buy!
Many of the ladies are wearing the L'Oreal Fashion
Week gold Canadian leaf necklace (see photo of the most stylish
Crissi Giamos, director of pr for Town Shoes with her gold
leaf). I move on to chat with the team from Glow magazine and then
to say hi to the Fazeteen gals.
Different Emotions at [FAT]
Hours later at the opening night of Alternative
Fashion Week [FAT], my crew and I hit the Distillery District.
Fashion mishaps happen almost immediately with Rachel breaking a
shoe strap….. Too cute - all of us torontostreetfashion.com
girls are wearing extra short short skirts!

On to the event - It is hard to screw up an event
at the Fermenting Cellar – it's such a great space! On hand
was a great media team greeting everyone at the door. From there,
a great section of the room was set aside for original modern art
– my fave being Braden Labonte who’s art medium
is acrylic/marker on plexiglass over fabric. Love it!
The runway area is well-defined and there's plenty
of seating and oh yes, did I mention the hotties tending the bar!
Also on display were the finalists for the NOW Design Challenge.
[see photo]. I had a blast hanging out backstage with the models
and local and international designers. Such a fun, no-stress atmosphere.
My fave designers are Ana Grebec from Serbia, Jasper Garvida
and Irene Stickney.
It
was hard to attend to the many designers being shown as I was being
interviewed by uatv.ca and canada.com behind the scenes.
I had a memorable conversation with designer Amie Scott and
her gang. I asked if they felt this FAT opening was really ALTERNATIVE?
I was surprised to hear that some of them thought it was cheap.
Someone went as far as to say fashion shows are ‘horseshit’.
Oh la mere! The consensus among this fashion good that only about
40% of the clothes on show were any good. Ouch, harsh!
Still, there are two more nights to make a final
decision. My thoughts are that it is such a different and welcome
feeling from L’Oreal. Judge for yourself, come down to the
Distillery District and check it out. I will be back on Thursday
night for the Street Fashion displays and hope to run into the cute
producer from uatv.ca again!
