Day 2 - Wednesday, October 18, 2006

What a difference a day makes! I arrive at [FAT] a bit late and
the runway show has already started. I scoot to my reserved seat
and try to take in the scene.
Right off the top I notice there are a lot of men
in attendance, but with a show entitled SEDUCTION can you blame
them? A few boys in back of me try to keep the moans a groans to
a minimum, but it seems at times the models' scantly clad bodies
are driving them over the edge!
 Unfortunately,
I miss Billy Rose and only catch a few of Lubica’s
crocheted bikinis. Heather Neil brings Vargas! illustrations
to life. SewBeIt evokes the elegance of the turn of the 19th
century and Phantom of the Opera mystery. Starkers (what
a great name for lingerie) is cute 40s pin-up polka dots, socks
and ruffled panties. Nets of elastic bands by Vessna Perunovich
blur the line between runway and performance art. RockitQueen
rocks the 50’s tigerprint, fishnets and pencil skirts. El
Toro surprised me, their flowing wrap skirts and pants with wide
ribbon belts and wool shrugs are so seasonal and wearable. Take
that Victoria’s Secret!
My
favourite designer of the evening is Svetlana Trifunovic
who distresses denim and re-combines it with lace, sequins and sheer
fabrics to create totally new concepts and silhouettes. Glyphiks
Design, Futurstate, Minx all work the techno-goth angle and
I remember gold cropped leggings from Jessica Clayton that if I
could, I'd definitely incorporate into my wardrobe. Dosha,
the finale of the runway, is a disturbingly macabre S&M parade
of models being led by men in grostesque masks. It reminds me of
Mexican horror cinema.
The evenings music is...a bit eclectic. It doesn't
exactly set the mood, but it certainly makes a statement. Pat Benatar,
Culture Club, Herbie Hancock, MIA, The Beastie Boys, Village People,
Madonna blend and fade into each other. Was that Dolly Parton’s
“Workin’ 9 to 5”? I watch a couple of cuties doing
the robot during one song and a model actually skips with delight
to the Time Warp during her segment. Heck, whatever the DJ was up
to, it works!
During the live act, Alison Solo, I ask
DJ Strauss about his inspiration for the night. Was this
a calculated plan to play with us and take us through familiar territory
in unexpected ways? He admits to loving all music and yes he is
trying to have fun with the crowd.
There
is a dark vibe to the evening in total contrast to the carefree
carnival of FANTASY. Valentina Churylova’s disturbing
video captures the sinister side of SEDUCTION with repeating images
of a naked human form writhing to calliope music, red scarves bundling
and obscuring its head, boulder-like upon its shoulders.
Oh and how could I have missed Emily Holten's
totally witty drawings of Karl Lagerfeld in the most hilarious circumstances.
The title of my favourite, Karl Largerfeld Performs a Briss.
Tomorrow’s the last night of Alternative
Fashion week. I know we’re all looking forward to what STREETWEAR
has to offer.
