The “week” begins months in advance
for Eddie Maleterre the Official Makeup Artist for L’Oreal
Paris in Canada and Artistic Director of L’Oreal Fashion Week.
With newly appointed Hair Team Lead Eric Del Monaco, Maleterre
meets with the designers to discuss ideas that portray and complement
their vision and collection. Each look is then conveyed to a team
of hair stylists and makeup artists who will tranform over 300 models
throughout the five days of fashion week.
The Inspiration behind the Hair and Make-Up
The inspiration to bring something new each season
is not necessarily always 'new'. For this season, we dug into the
past,” says Del Monaco, “Sometimes you need to take
one step backwards to move a couple steps forward.”
Taking inspiration from the past and adapting it
to fit the spring collections seems inevitable. (One just needs
to see what Frida Giannini is doing for Gucci). He goes on, “With
all the negativity in the world, we want to take people back to
happier times and so we are bringing the past back to the present."
For Malterre, fashion week is a time when L’Oreal,
with the help of its beauty team, can show and teach customers how
to use the new products for spring. Inspired by “Morning and
springtime in Canada” Maleterre has selected Emergence,
Innocence and Experience as the three looks for spring 2007.
Maleterre
explains Emergence as “…the promise of things
to come. It's how a Canadian woman is first introduced to colour
and different textures enabling her to embrace her beauty and transform
her look.”
The Look: Shimmery
eyes, glazed lips and a hint of blush

"Innocence showcases youth and a time
in a woman’s life when she is playful and willing to indulge
in new colours and styles”, says Del Monaco.
The Look: Rosy
cheeks, pastel eyes and candy lips
"Experience
reflects a more mature Canadian woman and is all about her confidence
and knowing what she likes and how to wear it".
The Look: Violet
lids with black liner, rich lips and hair swept to the side
Fashion week may be a good time for L’Oreal
to showcase its new collections but more importantly, Maleterre
states that it is a time when designers can show their collections,
creativity and style.
After all that is the point right? Toronto Fashion
Week, as Del Monaco puts it, is a reflection of Canadian fashion
for the rest of the world to see. "Having our own fashion week
shows the industry that we are ready to compete at an international
level. Who would not be proud to be apart of it?"
Maleterre certainly isn’t! “I am proud
to participate and have L’Oreal to help write the clothing.”
Del Monaco adds “Toronto Fashion Week is who we are."
