ELLE Magazine TFI New Labels F/W 2006 Showcase – March 22, 2006

Toronto Fashion Lives On
OK, someone try to tell me that Toronto Fashion Week is over. Not tonight baby! All is alive and well-dressed at the Elle/TFI New Labels Showcase and Design Competition held at Hazelton Lanes in Yorkville.

Who’s Who
I didn’t come for the show as I have another engagement. I am here for the New Labels Pre-Party, to check out who has survived Fashion Week: apparently tons of gorgeous people. This is the Who’s Who of the Toronto Fashion Industry, all jammy packed into a tasty wine & cheese cracker concoction. My elbows are going to wear down fast.

My Label
It’s not just about the New Labels appearing on stage tonight, but about the labels being paraded around pre-show. I am very impressed by this well turned-out crowd. I keep saying to TSF’s Rachel how good everyone looks. Super style and individuality is being strutted everywhere before my eyes. I talk to models, bookers, fashion merchandisers, fashion house reps, fashion PR about the events and highlights of fashion week and more importantly what they have on their own backs.

I chat with the super stylish crew of boutique Pho-Pa on Queen St West. Designer and owner Alexia is wearing an amazing jacket by L.A.M.B and incredible lux fur hat. She is just out to enjoy the evening with friend, personal shopper Ivy, who doesn’t need to worry too much about what to wear, as all she needs is that drop dead gorgeous smile she is sporting! Also on their crew, who you might mistake for a mini-Kate Moss, is Kasha. Kasha is decked out in head-to-toe vintage pretty much, with the coolest belt slung around her tiny hips, like her doppelganger Ms Moss.

Have a running chat with PR Princess, Christine Faulhaber. She looks classic tonight wearing a smart white blazer and Fidelity jeans tucked inside buttery light butterscotch high heel boots.
I bump into Robin Kay looking sparkly in a vintage black sweater with silver bits and a Pink Tartan shirt. She is being a bit coy hiding behind her evening bag. We flashback about last week for a minute or two before Robin is whisked away for other pre-show activities and press.

Get to snap a photograph of fashion photographer Andrew Maidanik. Photographers always get a bit funny when you want to take their photos, but Andrew is a sport. He is wearing a stripy shirt designed by Katya Revenko, in support of her performance tonight. How endearing! Andrew is with Elena Maidanik, and friend Rosemarie Umetsu of R.U. Designs. Elena has on an original necklace with huge red beads around her neck. She tells me she made it herself. I love it. She should start a jewelry design business tomorrow.

Rosemarie is wearing her own designs and is sticking to the ‘coat of the season’ look; as well she is wearing a black tie. So am I!!! We may be onto something hot. The ‘tie’ has been popping out at the most fashionable places these past few weeks. When I was at Mod Club last Friday night, it was one of the hot accessories I saw being flaunted about, worn with sophistication not rip-torn looks.

Also having a hilarious chat with fashion maestros, David Graham and Derrick Chetty about their photo TSF took at Fashion Week. I promised, I can’t tell you what they said, but it has ‘maid’ me in knots laughing. Sorry ‘mum’s’ the word. Anyways, wiping tears from my eyes, I have a fun moment sharing my thoughts with Derrick about the HIBEBE show last Friday, as he was unable to attend. He thinks it should have been on a week night, as having a show late at night the last day of the shows is risky if you want fashion press to show up. I agree in some ways, but ya got ta make the effort or make a pact with the devil. What am I talking about now?!!! Maybe all the red wine is getting me seeing the red devil himself. In any case, I got to bail and head to another event!

On the way out I grab the generous goodie bag TFI and Elle Canada has put together. I had an AMAZING TIME, and I didn’t even see the show!
