February 2009 Workshops
Most of the one-off sessions are aimed at absolute beginners and are intentionally project-focused, ensuring that participants have lots of messy hands-on fun and leave inspired with their new creations in hand.

Beginner Felting (Boiled Wool)
Saturday February 7th, 10am to 1pm
Guest Instructor: Textile designer Julie Sinden www.julesandannie.com
Participants will be introduced to this fun and easy temperature-shocking technique, using store-bought/pre-knit 100% wool sweater fragments. Once shrunken, these bits will be handstitched into quirky brooches, pouches or appliques. Yarn corking will also be explored as a creative option.

Organic Soap-Making

In this hands-on session, learn how to make a batch of organic soap, using the cold press method. Learn all about making your own natural, moisturizing soap - then, choose your own scents (essential oils) and exfoliants to make a fresh batch customized to your personal preferences. All ingredients are 100% natural and fair-trade. Participants will leave with several bars to enjoy at home or to give as gifts.

Beginner Sewing: DIY Scarves
Wednesday Feburary 11th, 6pm to 9pm
Instructor: Nathalie-Roze Fischer/Laura Cristinzo/Anneke Garnette
Stitching newbies will learn the basics in this popular introductory workshop - how a sewing machine functions, essential threading, key stitches and the finishing techniques required to create a funky fabric scarf. Participants may opt to use the one of the on-site Singer/Janome machines OR can bring their own.
Note: Particpants must either bring their own fabric & notions or purchase the course kit ($15). No more than 4 participants per session, so register early!

Creative Card-Making
Saturday February 14th, 10am to 12:30pm

Guest Instructor: Kim Kutner, the illustrator behind the popular Kim's Suitcase line of paper goods and accessories (www.kimkutner.com)
Participants will learn how to create personalized collage cards that incoroporate fabric, photos, stamps and paper ephemera. Materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring along photos, papers, buttons and whichever personal items they hope to add to their cards. Expect to leave with 2 to 6 unique cards, plus the inspiration to make more at home.

Beginner Wet Felting

This workshop introduces the process of wet felting – creating vibrant and textured
fabric and or objects from raw wool fleece. Inspiring samples projects, idea sheets and various resources will be discussed - plus step-by-step reference materials re: how to blend colours and fuse secondary fibres to take home.

Super-Fab Necklaces
Wednesday February 18th, 6pm to 8:30pm
Instructor: Nathalie-Roze Fischer
In this fun beginner session participants will learn basic techniques and clever shortcuts to create various contemporary pendant/necklace designs incorporating wire, beads, buttons, fabric, leather, found objects & semi-precious stones. Samples and inspiration sheets will be discussed. Everyone will leave with, at least, 2 completed designs. All tools and materials (beads, wire, etc.) will be provided, although particiants are encouraged to bring their own charms and beads with them to customize their creations.

Softies (DIY Stuffed Toys)
Saturday February 21st, 10am to 1pm
Instructor: Nathalie-Roze Fischer/Laura Cristinzo/Anneke Garnette
In this fun "softies" workshop participants will explore various techniques for creating their own customized stuffed toys using recycled fabrics, felted sweater bits, socks, yarn, buttons and other quirky crafty supplies. Materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring in their own notions to put their own stamp on their softies.
Note: basic sewing skills are required!

Lino-Block Printing

This beginner-friendly workshop covers the basic principles of lino-block printing, a creative yet simple and low-cost printing technique that's ideal for making your own designs to transfer onto paper goods and fabric.

LP Journals
Saturday February 28th, 10am to 1pm
Guest Instructor: Natalie Leblanc of PaperMuse
In this beginner-friendly paper crafts workshop, participants will learn how to recycle vintage LP album covers to create a quirky (refillable) journal with a library-style inside pocket. Bring in two album covers from your collection, pick some up at a thrift shop or buy them from Natalie's collection ($3 each). This hip eco-project makes a great gift or customized personal notebook.

DIY Brooches
Wednesday March 4th, 6pm to 8:30pm
Instructor: Nathalie-Roze Fischer
This beginner-friendly workshop will provide participants with the skills necessary to create their own fabric, bead and wire brooches. Samples will be discussed and clever techniques revealed. Everyone will leave with a minimum of two finished pieces.
All supplies and tools will be provided on-site.
