News * New

hi, I'm Rachel (PR freelancer, ex-fashion school student and founder of TSF.com). I started the blog way back in 2005 (before there was barely anything about Toronto fashion online) and spent many really fun years documenting fashion and street fashion in Toronto!

I recently had my second baby boy and my days of fashion parties, designer shows and frivolous shopping are but a happy memory. I still work a little on the blog, do other freelance writing and PR when I can!

So, please don't feel offended if I haven't responded to your E-mail, party invite or store opening. I do pass invites along to other bloggers though and we try to cover what we can!

Thanks for reading!

Pattern Pants Trend @ NY Fashion Week (SS12)

Friday, September 16th, 2011

This trend showed itself a little this past summer in our favorite shops but believe me, since we’re seeing it on the well-dressed of New York City now and on spring 2012 runways – it will only gain momentum later!

Fan di Fendi: Fall 2011 Fragrances

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Fan di Fendi, “free-spirited, modern & luxurious” is one of the new fall fragrances by the LVMH perfumes and cosmetics group and I was lucky enough to receive a gorgeous bottle as a gift (thx Viviana!).

The bottle itself is pure Italian bling in the iconic Fendi tradition: the gold cap and gold logo buckle on the bottle are made of heavy metal giving the entire presentation an opulent feel. Before trying the scent, I decided to look through the press kit and was so intrigued by the description (jubilantly fresh, tangerine, opulent floral…!) I couldn’t wait to discover Fendi’s newest scent!

I’m certainly no perfume connoisseur so cannot pick out hints of patchouli and leather – but can say at least that it has that depth that pricey perfumes should have  – you know, the lingering aroma that changes throughout the day. Try it out for yourself – available exclusively at The Bay ($88-$105).

Also new this fall:

Kenzo Flower Tag, a lighter scent geared more towards a younger market. It’s a little fruity and really floral-y with a hint of tea and musk. The bottle is the coolest part though – tall, curved and graffiti ‘tagged’ Also available at the Bay ($79/$99).

TIFF in T.O.

Friday, September 9th, 2011

It’s one of the most exciting times of the year in Toronto – TIFF time! It’s when the stars, celebs and big names in the world of film descend upon Toronto. It’s documentaries, movies, line-ups, red carpets, parties and spectacles!

The biggest news for Day 1 is Bono and U2 in town for the gala presentation for the documentary From The Sky Down. See photos at The Ampersand >>

hi everyone,

It’s that wonderful time of the year – vacation!! Torontostreetfashion will be taking a short break until the end of summer vacation. In the meantime, here are some beautiful photos that make me think of getting away!

This is cool – had to post.

It’s Nicki Minaj in her custom banana print leggings and top by T.O. based designer team Juma. The outfit was designed for her recent tour but this photo is of her surprise visit at L’il Wayne’s concert in New Jersey.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN: SAVAGE BEAUTY EXHIBITION @ THE MET

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

“You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.” – Alexander McQueen (1969-2010)

On August 5, 2011, I ended my visit to New York City just in time to see the spectacular sighting of the Alexander McQueen Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (on until Aug 7). I was never big on museums growing up; usually sticking to art galleries and craft shows as my means of seeing others’ creativity. The McQueen Exhibit changed this thinking of mine; it made me realize the various ways and methods there are to showcasing ones artistic thought, and highly exceeded my expectations being held at a museum.

One security worker, Dan, said “I’m not into fashion or anything of that sort, but the man was a genius. It’s incredible – stay in line and wait, it’ll be worth it!”

When I arrived at the Museum of Modern Art during mid-morning hours, there was a half hour line up just to get into the Museum (not including to buy tickets, make a donation, and the proceed to the line up specifically for the McQueen Exhibit). On reaching the actual line up for the fashion exhibit, it was a three-hour wait. People everywhere – media, tourists, and other fashion guru’s like myself. Waiting patiently to see the most talked about Exhibit in the city, workers tried to keep our hopes up with positive comments. One security worker, Dan, said “I’m not into fashion or anything of that sort, but the man was a genius. It’s incredible; stay in line and wait, it’ll be worth it!”

Another hour and a half later we finally made it to the opening of the show. People were crowding every square inch of the room, as workers tried to cram in as many people as they could at a time. The museum exhibit held a total of 11 rooms altogether, with 7 of them dedicated to specific genres his work: The Romantic Mind, Romantic Gothic, Cabinet of Curiosities, Romantic Nationalism, Romantic Exoticism, Romantic Primitivism, and Romantic Naturalism.

Alexander McQueen couture gowns made of everything from flowers, horsehair, duck and ostrich feathers and shearling

The genre is evident as soon as you make your way towards the next room, with vivid, rich colours, and haunting music. The rooms were constructed with his latest works, from his post-graduate collection after graduating Central Saint Martins, to his final runway show which was shown and completed by the lovely Sara Burton, after McQueen’s death in early 2010. The open displays allow onlookers to get up close and personal with his work, and examine the high fashion tailoring, extensive detail, and unimaginable creativity that McQueen put into his work. Everything from his outstanding outfits, to his extravagant accessories were on display (about 100 garments and 70 accessories), as well as the hologram of Kate Moss which was originally featured in his Fall 2006 Collection.

The Costume Institute, the institution that put together the exhibit, did a spectacular job of capturing McQueen’s thoughts and feelings, and showcasing his talent through those ideas. It will be talked about and remembered forever, just like the amazing designer himself. Although we were not allowed to take any pictures inside the exhibit, if you go to the MET blog you can see specific designs of his that are featured inside. In the end, it was most definitely well worth the wait!

Savage Beauty, opened May 4, 2011, was originally supposed to end in July, however due to the mass of people wanting to get in still, they prolonged it another week, ending on August 7th. The last weekend the Exhibit was open, the Museum even extended its hours – staying open until midnight.

JENN @ FASHION CAMP: WEEK 2

Friday, July 29th, 2011

by Jenn McNaughton

After another busy and successful week at The Make Den, my final design became a reality! A simplistic sheath dress with a lavender chiffon flounce creates a dynamic and monochromatic evening dress.

During the beginning of the week, the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. days were strictly focused on finishing my dress. As Irene warned me, “The last 10% of the dress takes 80% of the time.” I wasn’t exactly sure what she meant until I experienced it first hand; the careful hand-tacking, drapery of the flounce, inside facings, and rolled edge, all added the finishing touches on my design, helping to create a beautiful work of art. The finished product was an exact result of what I pictured in the beginning week of the camp. I was extremely pleased and proud of what I had created, and extremely thankful of all the assistance and advice Irene provided me with.

Towards the end of the week, we focused on styling and shooting my dress. Thursday was my day to go out and find the perfect pair of shoes and accessories to complete the outfit. On Friday, our creativity and imagination came to life as we travelled to High Park in the early morning to catch images of myself modelling my dress in the soft lighting. We snapped over a hundred shots with the beautiful wilderness as our backdrop. The final shot however was the most interesting…as we thought it would be a great idea for me to jump in platform pumps. The end shot was absolutely perfect, capturing my jump and dress; however, it resulted in bloody knees and feet. Fashion Bootcamp you say? Literally, however it’s extremely funny to look back on now. All in all, the day was a blast! Irene and I spent the afternoon at a Starbucks nearby, selecting and editing photos to use for my portfolio (into fashion school).

These past two weeks have been one of the most amazing experiences! My fashion skills and knowledge have broadened and great opportunities have sprung. I have met some lovely, genuine people along the way; ones that I know I will keep in touch with and visit when I move to the city in September! I can’t thank Irene enough for all her help and encouragement. Couldn’t have done this without her. Xoxo b

Do We Care? New Miss Teen Canada Crowned

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

That was my first insensitive reaction – but my second thought was ‘wow, these girls are hardworking, passionate and hopefully not your average bratty teen! (jokes)’

Lauren Howe was crowned Miss Teen Canada-World 2011 last week – in typical pageant style: swimsuit competition, talent, community service, etc… With a 95% high school average, worldwide charitable involvement and strong athletic dedication, Howe is more than just a pretty smile. She now has a busy year ahead of her, but is prepared for her journey ahead and for balancing her role of Miss Teen Canada-World 2011 with her studies as a first-year student at McGill University.

Among other prizes, Howe will receive over $25,000 in cash and prizes, including a shoot in the popular teen publication Faze Magazine, an assortment of handbags from Jeanne Lottie trip to Kenya with Free The Children, $3000 Scholarship to the Toronto academy of acting, a cover shoot for Supermodel magazine, and $1000 shopping spree at Stylexchange.

Pageantry aside (I think I’m biased after watching Toddlers & Tiaras), I would want my teenager daughter to be so ambitious!
