L'Oreal Fashion Week Day 4_Part 1

Today I arrived at the tent early enough to watch Mother Hen, Ms. Robin Kay walk around to ensure every little thing was in order, "Who's is that? Why is that there?" while her aides-in-tow moved things about and acted equally concerned. She looked fabulous first thing (as always) garbed in a luxurious fur vest - but with a personal RV parked behind the tent, it must make late-night abuses easier to bear the next morn.

2p.m. Impromptu Addition
Sar Couture went from wearable to way-out when a set of models came out back to back in heavy tweed pants paired with a gold textured top and then gold metallic tights paired with a lacy blouse. I'm no sleuth, but haven't we seen these pieces before? Perhaps crossovers from Sarah Nicol's 'winning' quelque filles collection shown at last year's TFI New Labels Competition...This collection included numerous pieces in every imaginable fabric and color, showing that although quantity is there, quality is not exactly runway ready.

Farley Chatto is no amateur so it was surprising to see a drawn out, five part fleet of everything from wool suits to spandex boy shorts to plaid kilts. (The theme was about weary hunters in the Scottish highlands). It was equally surprising that the reputable Judy Inc, stylists did a truly amazing job of pairing pieces, but the pants were so distractingly wrinkled I have to wonder if they're supposed to be that way?! The FORD male models in this show were gorgeous - the best looking line-up of the week - but those skin color spandex shorts were so unflattering, even I had to turn an eye. There was a cool pin-stripe duffel coat though.

3p.m. Waste of Time
I hate to be so snarky today, but I came early for...? The worst part of the Tatsuaki show was that the PR team did such a great job promoting the line (I heard that even Holt Renfrew would show) it made it all the more disappointing. I didn't catch Barb Atkin and her crew but couldn't help watching Jeanne Beker sitting across from me both trying to keep her eyes open and then expressing wonderment. What are we doing here? Outfit after outfit were items you could find in a dozen stores on Spadina - and there was no coherency to the collection whatsoever. I should've listened to Jeanne's Fashion Television interview with designer Dan Liu to make sense of it all, but I made a beeline to the media tent to wait for the Zoran Dobric show.

i disagree - every designer has their own style of designs and i think both Sar Couture and Farley Chatto did an amazing job in pairing the pieces. I have heard nothing but rave reviews for the duo, more so than any other show I attended that day. But Anonymous is correct, everyone is entitled to their own OPINION.

Styling at Farley Chatto was really good - noticeable pinned hems and MAJOR wrinkles ruins a show.

There was absolutely NO consistency at the Sar show, so rave reviews? I doubt it.

Have you asked Farley Chatto if perhaps it was part of the design before assuming? I highly doubt this.

Sam,
thank you for such a positive comment! it's a shame people waste their time criticizing designers - what do they do? probably nothing lol

Who are you people?! Did you even read this? And where are all these rave reviews? I can't find anything online and certainly nothing from any of the major fashion news sources. Maybe because its not worth it.

This colour scheme looks like he picked up a para paints colour swatch and ripped it straight off. Brown lace should stay where it belongs - my grandma's curtains! And the gold tights look borrowed right from American Apparel and probably were, but that's not even the half of it because whoever put models in LARVA WHITE TIGHTS should be fired! Sorry I don't want my legs to look like Casper the Ghost's. oh, also - what is that weird unicorn sweater doing in there? It looks nothing like the rest of this collection. Actually, the menswear doesn't relate to the womens at all.
Finally, I don't know who told them to use the word "couture" in their name, because this is clearly ready to wear... what a waste of hot male models!

Can someone please find me a link to these "rave reviews"? Maybe his mom liked it and wrote a blog or something?
And btw - I am a designer - and I know a flop when I see one.

sar couture and farley chatto are two seperate labels. sar couture was the ladies and farley chatto is a menswear designer. if you were at the show, and read the insert, you would realize they were TWO SERPATE shows. "couture" means "to sew" in french.... how unfortunate for you to have commented on something you know nothing about. i enjoyed the show, and i am in no means anyones mother.

So why put the menswear and ladieswear in the same show? It's just confusing for people who weren't there - sorry I don't have a media pass, I don't care enough about Toronto - sorry, "L'Oreal" fashion week to waste my money on one.

Couture, if you don't live under a rock - which I suspect you might - also means clothing which is handstitched and tailored to each individual client. There are very strict standards in France about who can use the term 'Couture' and who can't. Apparently here anyone can throw the term around if they're feeling pretentious...

And no, I didn't show at fashion week. Did any of you? No? Didn't think so. Guess you don't want to waste $10, 000 either.

Anyone can use the word COUTURE, it's the words HAUTE COUTURE that has specific standards and rules, you ignorant fool. it's a shame, that you are making such a spectacle of yourself on here which actually shows to me, that you do care... ALOT... :) The fact that there were mens and womens in one show and you couldn't grasp that concept, only further supports my theory, that it is in fact YOU who lives under a rock, and cannot read that this was a DOUBLE FEATURE which means, two different designers. On both designers websites it states they do custom work, which by your definition means "clothing which is handstitched and tailored to each individual client"... which does mean Couture... so thank you Anonymous, for further supporting my opinion :)
Cheers!

I was going to reply with the same comment! except not as blunt LOL

Yawn. Whatever. You're just splitting hairs. Couture is a really pretentious name to give yourself, unless you're making incredibly high quality clothing, which this isn't. Everyone knows that the show of the week was Denis Gagnon. This didn't even hold a candle to his show.

And I think I said already that I wasn't at the show, so how could I have read that it was a double feature? What is your problem?

By the way, Rebecca - I'm sure your mother didn't teach you to talk to people like that. You really don't need to be so rude, but I expect as much from fashion people so it's really no surprise.

Shame on all of you who are wasting time bad-mouthing local talent when we should all be doing what we can to promote and support it, no matter what your opinion on the styling may be.
As for the quality, how can one possibly comment on something they were not there to witness first hand?
These people are working to live their dreams and putting their art and passion out there for the world to enjoy, understandably, not everyone is going to like what they see, but that's still no reason to hide behind your anonymous screen names and critique work that really you know nothing about.
Going back to the original posting on this topic-Farley Chatto's collection was anything but "drawn-out", and if someone were to do a little bit of research on Sara's, they would see that there were no repeats from season to season... which, by the way, is not unusual for designers to carry over a good-seller for a few seasons anyways.

Designers, if you are going to show your collection, do yourself a favor and make sure it is 100% to par. 100%.
And anyone in the public eye should expect both criticism and praise and get on with life. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
