Too-Thin Model Debate
With L’Oreal Fashion Week just off Toronto’s doorstep and various others around the world, shouldn’t fashion critics be getting on the bathroom scale instead? The ‘scale’ of justice today seems unfairly tipped against the fashion model.
The international fashion debate over model weight and welfare has been raging for over a year now, and the question remains:
'Why is it the models that are constantly attacked for being underweight?'
Sonja tips the scales in defense of these genetically thin and mostly vulnerable working girls (read here).
We'd love to hear what your thoughts are about the state of skinny:
Labels: models

I agree, some clothes look better on a skinny model, but there is a difference between tall and thin, and totally bulimic/anorexic... there's gotta be some self-regulation w/in the industry or else people will (rightly) accuse the fashion industry of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes.
I don't think the larger problem is with the girls themselves, regardless if they are genetically thin or not. It lies in the fact that we only use these 'genetically thin' people when modelling clothes even for the average person. People on covers of magazines are airbrushed to be thinner, mannequins in stores are a size zero... I don't think the girls should be attacked, it's the people who are only hiring those girls instead of models of all shapes and sizes.
Clothes look better on thin models. If I am trying to sell a product, I want my clothes to look as good as they can. Not to say some labels don't look good on all shapes and sizes: Juicy, Sevens - they look good on J-lo or curvy body types. But Dolce & Gabbana's target client is tall and thin. So is Versace's, Alexander McQueen, Dior, etc. etc.
Don't forget the other end of the spectrum is unhealthy as well - Anna Nicole Smith wasn't skinny but she wasn't healthy either...
Models are skinny for a frig reason! Hello, climate change bandwagon anyone?
