No red carpet hinted that the ultra-exclusive opening party for Toronto’s Alternative Arts & Fashion Week [FAT] was happening on a quiet tree-lined street, but those in the know – designers, buyers, photographers and models, crowded into the beautiful Edwardian home to fling their bling and flash their most sultry smiles.
Every great cultural movement has a great patron at its heart, and the party was hosted by Toronto’s own Medici – Shawn Venasse. Like Gertrude Stein re-incarnated with kindness and style, Venasse has supported some of Canada’s most renowned designers, including Gaudet, whose fashion on film will open [FAT] and has been the buzz of fashion circles for weeks. Louie Manzo has teamed up with Brazilian Baby Steinberg to shake Toronto men out of their style slumber with gender-bending basics that will soon stock the shelves of every metro-sexual closet. [FAT] founder Vanja Vasic looked cool as Marlene Deitrich while Canada’s emerging StyleStars tried not to flutter around her – hard to do with a lady that has launched and supported the sky-rocketing careers of many.
